A man has been charged with possessing cannabis after horse riders stumbled upon seven kilograms of cannabis hidden in barrels in bushland on the Far South Coast, police say. The two recreational riders were riding through a forest area west of Cobargo this month when they encountered a man "acting suspiciously", Inspector Peter Volf said.

"I believe he was just sticking his head up out of the bush, having a look around. He was by himself and they were suspicious about what he was doing. "They spoke to him, said 'Hello', but he left; he didn't hang around."

A short time late, the riders discovered almost seven kilograms of cannabis hidden in two barrels, Inspector Volf said. He could not say how well hidden the barrels were. The riders contacted police, who found another 1.5 kilograms of cannabis at a house in Cobargo on May 25.

Police yesterday charged a 49-year-old man with possessing a commercial quantity of drugs, two counts of possessing drugs and supplying a prohibited drug. "The evidence [that led police to the residence] is a matter for the courts - it was good police work and local inquiries," Inspector Volf said. The street value of the total cannabis seized is estimated to be $75,000.

He was granted bail and will face Narooma Local Court on July 17.
