Police in the Solomon Islands have made one of the largest seizures of cannabis in the country following the discovery of a plantation of more than 3,000 plants.

Police drug squad officers said Tuesday's haul at the village of Soniutu near Tetere on Guadalcanal Island weighed more than a tonne.

The plantation of around 3,200 plants was believed to be the major source of cannabis supply to the nearby capital Honiara.

Police said they were looking for two suspects who fled into the bush when officers raided the plantation.

Inspector Edward Juvia said it was only a matter of time before they were caught.

Police used a three-tonne truck to move the plants to Honiara for destruction.

It was the largest number of cannabis plants seized in the Solomons and possibly the second largest by weight, police said.
