Four robbers posing as agents with the Drug Enforcement Agency committed a home-invasion robbery in Royal Oaks on Tuesday morning, tying up the residents and stealing $6,500 in property after they searched in vain for narcotics, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office said.

About 4:22 a.m., the bandits entered the front door of a home in the 3200 block of Hillman Lane, carrying police-style flashlights, semi-automatic handguns, a sawed-off shotgun and a rifle, sheriff's deputies said Wednesday.

Wearing masks and using hand-held radios to communicate with each other and others outside, the imposters identified themselves verbally as federal DEA agents, sheriff's Sgt. Joe Pedroza said.

Otherwise, there were no signs identifying the four as agents, Pedroza said. The robbers tied up six of the residents, including a 35-year-old, someone in his or her early 20s and four teenagers, Pedroza said. A 2-year-old was not bound, he said.

The four assailants demanded drugs, money and marijuana plants, Pedroza said. When they found there were no drugs or money, they stole $6,500 worth of personal property, including a television, stereos and other home electronics, he said.

No one was injured in the robbery, Pedroza said.

After the robbers left, the residents untied themselves and called the Sheriff's Office.

Eight years ago, sheriff's deputies searched the same home for marijuana cultivation, Pedroza said. Pedroza declined to say if anything was found at that time.
