Agents from the San Bernardino County Land Use Services Department inspected a medical marijuana dispensary here Wednesday on a complaint that it may be operating illegally.

A code enforcement officer and a planner from the department met with directors from the Inland Empire Patient Group to evaluate how the facility is run and what impacts it may have on nearby businesses and traffic.

The action came as county officials are attempting to develop code regulations for such dispensaries.

"That's what staff was looking for," said Julie Rynerson Rock, director of the department. "It gives the planner a vision for what the use actually looks like."

The inspection came on the heels of the county Board of Supervisors' vote Tuesday to extend a moratorium on the issuance of permits for the dispensaries until June 19 so that officials can set guidelines for them.

The group's dispensary opened June 22, one day before the original 45-day moratorium was enacted.

Rynerson Rock said it was coincidental that the complaint and inspection followed the supervisors' vote.

Earlier this week, sheriff's deputies also inspected the facility, acting on another complaint, and found everything to be in order, Director Ryan Michaels said.

Rynerson Rock said the inspection turned out to be an opportunity to open a working relationship with the dispensary as the county presses forward with how to handle similar facilities in the future.

That's something Michaels says he welcomes.

"We want the county to watch the facility and use it as a model," Michaels said.
