San Jose, CA--Silicon Valley Cannabis Coalition (SVCC), a grassroots coalition of local people and groups interested in preserving the safe, legal use of medical marijuana in the South Bay, will hold a meeting on Thursday, August 4th at 8 PM at the UFCW Local 5 headquarters, located at 240 South Market Street in San Jose. The coalition was formed to advocate for medical marijuana patients and those who give them safe access to medicine, and works to ensure that their access to medicine continues. Current efforts focus on voter registration in advance of the 2012 election.
SVCC was formed in response to recent anti-marijuana actions in the South Bay, with Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Mountain View, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale all banning medical marijuana dispensaries(MMDs) outright, and San Jose proposing to limit the number of MMDs to 10.
"The 2012 election will be incredibly important to the future of medical marijuana in the South Bay," says Dave Hodges, medical marijuana activist and founder of the San Jose marijuana collective All American Cannabis Club (A2C2). "Five city council seats in San Jose will be up for grabs, and the people who fill those seats will be instrumental in determining how the city regulates MMDs in the future."
Hodges says support for safe access to medicinal marijuana is strong in the community, but pressure from interest groups, including a multi-agency narcotics officers' task force, has caused confusion in local governments, resulting in the ban or curtailment of the availability of medical cannabis in local cities.
Silicon Valley Cannabis Coalition's voter registration drive aims to combat this disturbing trend. "Only by electing officials who fully support patients' rights to medicate, as allowed by California state law, can we ensure MMDs can continue to help medical marijuana patients in the South Bay have access to safe and legal medicine."
Hodges notes that less then 130,000 people in San Jose voted in the last mayoral election, out of a population of nearly 1 million. "We need to get more people registered, and they need to vote. We cannot let special interest groups armed with distorted facts write the policy on this issue."
