The smell of marijuana filled the air as Indiana State Police cleaned out a house involved in what they said is the biggest pot bust in Vigo County this year.
Gregory K. Cesinger, 53, of Terre Haute was arrested around 6 a.m. Thursday after senior troopers Jared Nicoson and Rich Reynolds allegedly watched him harvest a plot of marijuana in western Clay County near Indiana 42, said State Police public information Sgt. Joe Watts. Nicoson and Reynolds then secured a search warrant for Cesinger’s Vigo County home, which sits on the highway near the Palmer Street intersection, Watts said.
By noon, officers searching the house not far from the plot found several plants hanging upside-down on wires upstairs, marijuana in small plastic bags in paper sacks throughout the house and a growing operation in the basement, he said.
Watts said the growing operation had lamps, pots, soil and dehumidifiers.
Marijuana also was hanging in a barn behind the house, he said.
The six-hour search yielded about 1,500 plants from the plot, home and barn to total more than 200 pounds — if it were cultivated for sale, Watts said.
Police estimated $200,000 as the street value for the marijuana, which can be sold from $700 to $1,000 a pound, he said.
Various items of drug paraphernalia, U.S. currency and weapons also were found.
Cesinger is incarcerated in the Clay County Jail on preliminary charges of possession of marijuana over 10 pounds and cultivating marijuana over 10 pounds, both class-C felonies, Watts said. His bail is set at $10,000.
Each charge carries a sentence of two to eight years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines, if convicted, he said.
“I’m sure this is going to be our largest bust of the year for our post,” he said.
