I learned top dressing and WATERING IN from Horticulturalists as a better source of micro-organisms and nutrients instead of making compost teas.
As an outdoor and indoor gardener/farmer compost used as a top dress works. All N doesn't escape other organisms that break down SOM and certainly doesn't ALL get released as a gas. 420% on that fer sure. I don't add any soluble or in-soluble Nitrogen to my soil and its OLD.
Plants have the ability to pull N from the atmosphere. Chop the plant leave the roots in the ground...boom N in the soil. Its really that easy.
