A new support group has formed for medical marijuana patients.
The Corvallis Cannabis Support Group had its first meeting last week, with five people in attendance. Organizer Ed Glick is hoping the monthly meetings will grow as word gets out.
"I think the need has been around for a long time because of the fragmented services and lack of services that exist to assist cannabis patients," Glick said.
Glick, a former nurse and longtime advocate for medical marijuana, said the purpose of the group is to help people determine whether cannabis could be useful for their medical conditions and provide a supportive atmosphere for discussion of difficulties encountered in working with doctors.
Even though the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program has issued nearly 56,000 cards to authorized patients, Glick said, accurate information about the herb's medical benefits can still be hard to come by – even from physicians.
"There's no excuse for these thousands of patients to be ignored by the medical establishment," Glick said.
Glick emphasized that no marijuana use is allowed at the meetings.
"This is not a place for people to come and smoke pot," Glick said. "I'm hoping this support group would be someplace somebody's grandmother would be comfortable to come in and get answers."
The Corvallis Cannabis Support Group meets at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month in the offices of CAN! Research, Education and Consulting, 551 S.W. Fourth St. The next meeting will be Sept. 11.
