About 60 East Texans gathered at the Where's Rufus sports bar in Tyler on Sunday to rally in support of legislation that would decriminalize marijuana in Texas.

Last week, State Representative David Simpson filed House Bill 2165 that would remove all references to marijuana and its illegality from Texas law. Sunday's event was organized by Libertarian candidate for the Texas House, Joel Gardner, and East Texas marijuana law reform groups.

Supporters and speakers at the rally said that the medical benefits of cannabis for those suffering from seizures and other conditions has been ignored by politicians.

Rocky Palmquist, a hemp farmer and 2014 Libertarian candidate for Texas Agriculture Commissioner, said that the laws restricting hemp manufacturing in Texas limits the economy.

"We have hemp oil and we can buy hemp clothing, but the farmers in the state of Texas aren't allowed to grow it." Palmquist said.

Palmquist noted that the hemp plant that he farms is not the same cannabis plant that is used to get high or as a medicine, but he believes criminalizing either is a form of government meddling.

"The biggest drug problem in America today is the war on America that the government likes to call the war on drugs. This is an intrusion into your life."
Speakers at the rally praised Simpson for filing the unprecedented bill and urged supporters to contact their state representatives to vote in favor of the bill.

Joel Gardner told attendees that the next step for Simpson's recently filed bill is for it to be reviewed by a Texas House committee.
