CA - Sutter County residents soon can weigh in on whether the county should issue identification cards for medical marijuana users.

A public hearing on the issue is slated for the Board of Supervisors meeting at 7 p.m. April 6. A yes vote by the board would bring the county's Health Division into the state Department of Public Health's ID card program, with applicants paying a county and state fee for identification.

Voters in 1996 passed Proposition 215, which defied the federal ban on pot by allowing its use and cultivation with a physician's approval. Sutter has resisted launching ID programs for cannabis users, although Yuba County began one in 2008.
