Three people from the N.P.A. have been charged with various drug offences including “Supplying a Dangerous Drug” after police intercepted posted packages addressed to residents in the area.

Police received confidential information that packages posted from Cairns and sent to Bamaga Post Office might contain marijuana (cannabis).

Police intercepted the packages and on examining the contents found various quantities of cannabis wrapped in “crude” methods of disguise.

One bundle arrived along with children’s toys and clothing.

The packages (with a majority of the drugs being substituted) were then allowed to be collected by the addressee from the Post Office.

Police conducted an operation and in turn intercepted the person in possession of the package, with the suspects detained and spoken to at Bamaga Police Station. Further enquiries conducted at an address led police to another substantial quantity of cannabis. Two of the three persons charged will face Bamaga Magistrate’s Court in November.

Police have warned that it is an offence against the Drugs Misuse Act to Possess and Supply Dangerous Drugs and that a Commonwealth Offence also exists for persons knowingly receiving dangerous goods in the mail and that severe penalties apply.

Sgt Andrew Merchant, Officer in Charge of Bamaga Police Station, said: “People are prepared to try various methods to try to smuggle drugs into the community, and, while it is a difficult task to totally stop supply, we have made some inroads here with this investigation.

“These criminals who are supplying the drugs to others are hurting the families of people they know and live with and, in some cases, are even related to them.

“We are seeking assistance from members of the community to provide us with any information that may help stop this supply of drugs.”

Information can be provided to Crime Stoppers on freecall 1800 000 000. Callers do not have to give their name AND where their information leads to the arrest of a person as a direct result of the information provided they may be entitled to a reward of UP TO $1000.00. This relates to ANY information which could solve a crime.
