Campaigners for the legalisation of cannabis openly smoked the drug in public at a 'protest picnic' in the city.

The Plymouth Cannabis Social Club are now planning further public protests after around 30 people enjoyed the picnic at Stonehouse Creek on Sunday.

Formed in 2014, the group wants to see "a safe, regulated, and local cannabis community" in the Plymouth area.

There were no arrests at the weekend's event.

Organisers said medicinal cannabis users and a speaker with experience in the United State's legalised medicinal marijuana industry were among those to attend.

The Plymouth Cannabis Social Club is part of a national organisation, UK Cannabis Social Clubs, and aims to establish a 'private members' club for those who wish to consume the illegal drug.

Similar events have previously been staged in Exeter.
