A cannabis dealer claimed to smoke 20 joints a day when he was caught with a bag of the drug in his car and a "tick list" on his phone.

A police officer smelled cannabis as he approached 28-year-old Mozafar Shan's Toyota on Green Lane, Marske, and the driver handed over a small amount of "skunk".

When told his car would be searched, Shan said: "That's fine. I don't have any more."

"That wasn't true," said prosecutor Harry Hadfield at Teesside Crown Court.

About 55g of cannabis, worth more than £500, and a set of digital scales were found in the glove box.

Shan said: "It's all for my own use. I smoke 20 joints a day."

A seized mobile phone revealed a "tick list" after the search at about 7.20pm on September 19 last year.

It also uncovered drug-related messages including requests for cannabis and a reference to "blue cheese", a strain of the drug.

At first Shan claimed the drugs were for his own personal use, saying he smoked cannabis at night while working as a taxi dispatcher.

He later confessed he had supplied friends with cannabis for about a year, selling some to cover his costs and smoking the rest.

Shan, of Charltons, Saltburn, admitted possessing a Class B drug with intent to supply, his first conviction, though he had a previous caution for drug possession.

Kelleigh Lodge, defending, suggested a suspended sentence order for Shan, now working as a door-to-door salesman.

Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, gave Shan a six-month jail term suspended for two years with 100 hours' unpaid work, 20 days' rehabilitation activity and £535 costs.
