Westport Planning Board Slated To Talk Pot, Solar Law

The Planning Board isn't giving up on a new solar energy bylaw, and is also beginning what may be a long discussion about medical marijuana clinics in town.

No one has tried to open a medical marijuana clinic in Westport yet.

The Planning Board sponsored a solar energy bylaw at November's Town Meeting, which failed 68-49. The proposed bylaw would have provided zoning and an approval process for both large and small solar energy installations in town.

The Planning Board swore to return to the spring Town Meeting with a new bylaw which would be nearly the same as their first effort but which the public would get to "tweak" at a series of public hearings.

The board is scheduled to hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m. at the Town Hall Annex. This is the second time since the failure of the original bylaw that residents have had an opportunity to provide input.

Shortly after the bylaw's defeat in November, Planning Board member Elaine Ostroff said one of the reasons the solar energy bylaw failed to pass was strategy. Ostroff said the Planning Board brought a solar energy expert to the meeting, but Town Meeting members voted against hearing further discussion before the expert could speak.

Ostroff said the Planning Board will continue to work closely with the energy committee in refining and presenting the solar energy bylaw.

Ostroff said she remains convinced that the bylaw is vital for a town that does not have any zoning specific to solar energy.
