When do plants grow?

I'm on an 18/6 schedule right now. the question I had is, do the plants grow more during the dark period or the light period? reason i ask is because i like to keep my lights REAL close to my plants (CFLs, about 1 inch or a little less) and don't want to have the plant make contact with the light while growing..

lol u should leave a video camera rolling, that would be tight like a little journal and then u could see the plants grow thru the time lapse

Hehe, good idea. I think they do that with a photo camera taking lots of pictures of a long period of time, could be wrong though. I'd love to see something like that.
