Yellow & brown spots on fan leaves

Hi all,

I'm currently growing UK cheese.

Decided to do Quadlining for the first time.

The plant has 1 month and I have just noticed some yellow/brown spots on some of the lower fan leaves, (a couple of spots on some top ones too).

Tuesday was its first run-off watering (not filtered) in a 5-gallon pot.

Nutrients: Bio-Grow (2ml per liter)

Soil: Biobizz Light-Mix

I don't know if it happened because of overwatering, Ph water, deficiency, or fungus.

Could someone please help me with it?

P.s. sorry for the quality of the pictures.

Thank you,
Nicol

Good morning my friend hope you are having a nice weekend.
Sorry about your girl.
Have you been letting the pot dry out before feeding again?
How often do you feed? Actual nutrients not just water?
Are you following the schedule for your nutrients? Full strength?
Just out of curiosity do you know the ph of your feed water?
Talk soon.

Hi @Bill284 I hope you are well.

I'm going to answer each of your questions:

1. Have you been letting the pot dry out before feeding again?

Unfortunately, I didn't let it completely dry last time. Just trying to make those roots extend. (Most probably I did very wrong)

2. How often do you feed? Actual nutrients not just water?

Every other time (nuts-water-nuts-water). In the last weeks I have been feeding the plant every 3/4 days, but thinking of extending the waiting time now. Like last time I watered, it was on Tuesday, and the pot is still heavy if I try to lift it. I was thinking to wait 1 week from the last watering.

3. Are you following the schedule for your nutrients? Full strength?

Yes, Full strength. 2 ML of Biobizz Bio-Grow per liter. (Someone else told me to do half dosage for very young plants). Didn't follow the advice though :/

4. Just out of curiosity do you know the ph of your feed water?

Unfortunately, I don't know it and I don't have the tool for it. Thinking to use filtered water from now on.

Ok so your not doing anything major wrong.
The biggest issue I see is overwatering.
The roots require air to function properly.
Letting the pot dry out is better for root growth.
Wet roots are lazy.
Drying makes them search out water and get air at the same time.
I have a potting method that's almost impossible to overwater.
Bill284 Method in my Heavens Shores thread.
But in the meantime letting the pot dry right out will benefit her.
Your feeding correctly btw. :thumb: feed/water/feed/water......
Just a touch too often.
It might be beneficial to know your ph.
Usually in soil it's not vital.
Unless it's way way off.
Keep up the good work my friend.
Your on the right track.
Take care.

Proper watering is one of the challenges many growers face, especially new growers. Canna is a plant that likes a wet/dry cycle when grown in soil. In a normal pot if you don't let the soil dry out properly it can lead to root rot and the inability of the plant to uptake nutrients leading to what looks like deficiencies even though the nutrients are present in the soil.

You can either learn to water properly (Emila has a good guide to read for that) or, skip the learning curve entirely and come join us in #SIP Club . You'll get happier, healthier, and larger plants with perfect watering every time since the plant waters itself.

Or Bill's method of layering the pot with alternate layers of soil and perlite will also help you eliminate overwatering.

Just find a way that fits with how you like to grow. Growing is a lot more fun when the plants are healthy and happy.

You keep selling those SIP's no one is going to try my method.
Hey Azi :ciao::high-five:
He has a good system Nicol, especially for new growers.
Just fill the res.
Doesn't get any easier.
The only drawback I see is it doesn't teach proper watering techniques.
But if you get a big healthy plant that doesn't really matter.
I find root growth key to a big healthy girl.
SIPs grow big root systems so you get a great result.
Happy growing. :passitleft:

Because you don't need to know them with our setup. :laughtwo:

But seriously, one could argue (and I do) that watering through the reservoir is more inkeeping with feeding organically in that the plant determines when and how much water it wants. Just like organic nutes where the plant tells the microbes what nutrients it wants at any given time.

But there are many ways to water our plants properly. Bill's method is to build the soil in the pot with layers of perlite which eliminates the overwatering issue. Emilya's method involves learning the wet/dry cycle.

So, whatever you choose, just know that proper watering of these plants is different from most plants if you want to grow them to their potential. SIPs aren't the only way to do it, just the easiest. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Hey @Bill284 thank you for the recommendations about the dry/wet cycle I definitely have to improve with that. Not really sure how to know 100% when it’s time to water.

That’s a really long thread! I’m going to have to take some time and read through. Any idea where I may be able to find that potting method in your thread? Would love to see it 🙂

Start there for solo cup to 1 gal air pot.
But there is a solo cup method at the beginning.
And an uppot method for ever type of pot they make.
The major point is to have 1” thick layers of perlite every couple inches.
I add Bokashi, frass and DYNOMYCO for root health and growth.
I grow roots not plants.
For growing such massive healthy roots I get a massive healthy plant as a reward.
The action is all in the root zone.
Plant health is completely dependent on the roots so that’s where I concentrated my energy.
I figured out a new way of potting that will benefit everyone who tries it.
Regardless of media as it works with everything you put in a pot.
Have a peak and I’ll answer any questions.
Take care.
