The Committee to Grow Craig hosted an event Thursday night to promote its petition for a vote on retail marijuana in Craig.

Shaun Hadley, owner of the Craig Apothecary, welcomed the crowd of about 30 people before introducing the first speaker, Christie Lunsford.

Lunsford works in the cannabis industry and provided social, medical and historical insight into the plant.

Following Lunsford were hosts of the CNN show "High Profits," Brian Rogers and Caitlin McGuire, who shared their personal experience with bringing the marijuana industry to Breckenridge.

In discussion, attendees asked about how to communicate with local elected officials and promote recreational pot.

Rogers said showing up to meetings and making your presence known in a respectful fashion is key to moving the issue forward.

The potential revenues from retail marijuana were also brought up as a powerful argument in favor of the initiative.

"Nothing is going to change if Craig allows for the sale of recreational marijuana except for the better," Rogers said. "Every already smokes all the weed they're going to, and it's all about capitalizing on that tax revenue."

Craig resident Leonard Zaragoza said he thought the meeting was informative, and he would encourage others to get involved and educated.

The main argument Zaragoza said he would make in support of the initiative was the funding it would provide for education and law enforcement through tax revenue.

"I would really hit on those points to try and convince somebody to look at the monetary issue," he said.

The Committee to Grow Craig must submit its petition by July 27. To sign the petition, visit one of the following locations in Craig:
