Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the second most common cannabinoid found in cannabis. Unlike its euphoric sister, THC (or tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD plays it cool, offering relaxing, non-intoxicating effects that lend themselves to a variety of personal and medicinal uses. Because CBD lacks the stoney side effects typical of high-THC strains, it’s a great choice for patients needing to keep a clear head while treating pain, nausea, headaches, stress, anxiety, muscle spasms, epilepsy, and more.

It’s clear that many people have experienced the upsides of CBD, but with so many high-CBD strains hitting the market today, it can be difficult to choose the one for you. Here, we’ll go over what it means for a strain to be high in CBD along with identifying which high-CBD strains are the most popular and easy-to-find based on Leafly user-submitted reviews.

What does it mean for a strain to be high in CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, a non-intoxicating cannabis molecule with a variety of anecdotal and studied benefits. Strains high in CBD are popular with users for help with:

  • Pain relief
  • Inflammation
  • Seizures
  • Anxiety
Just as you can search for strains high in THC, sativa, or indica, you can also search for strains high in CBD – and Leafly users do just that.

If you’re interested in finding high CBD strains yourself, look for strains that contain only circles in their Leafly strain flower. This will help you find strains that consistently express high levels of CBD, which is more likely to bring you clear-headed relief. But if you’re ready to cut to the chase, here are the top picks from our users:

1. Harlequin
Harlequin is one of the most popular CBD strains available. Typically testing around the 5:2 CBD/THC ratio, it exhibits a clear-headed alertness with only mild euphoria. Harlequin has a happy bent that most will find enhances whatever activity they are engaged in.

2. Ringo’s Gift
Ringo’s Gift—named for activist, CBD specialist, and founder of SoHum Seeds, Lawrence Ringo—is a hybrid cross of Harle-Tsu and ACDC. It keeps on giving to patients seeking a nearly full-on CBD-driven strain, with an average ratio of 24:1 CBD/THC.

3. Sweet and Sour Widow
Sweet and Sour Widow lands in the middle ground with a 1:1 CBD/THC ratio. This even split offers first-time cannabis consumers an enjoyable entry point to both THC and CBD without sending them into orbit. It also makes for good medicine while being slightly euphoric and stoney.

4. Stephen Hawking Kush
Stephen Hawking Kush offers mild, relaxing effects while doling out a healthy dose of CBD, too. This indica-dominant strain is one of the more unique CBD cuts out there, offering both heady and soothing effects.

5. ACDC
ACDC makes an easy favorite. The cannabinoid content is usually heavily CBD-dominant, sitting on average at 20:1 in its CBD/THC ratio. An imperceptible amount of THC makes ACDC an outstanding companion for daily medicinal cannabis consumers seeking to relieve tension, pain, or anxiety.

Bonus staff review: “Known for its keen ability to lift anxiety of all shades, this strain is a godsend to consumers susceptible to the side effects of THC. This strain allows you to harness many of the desirable traits of cannabis, like light-footed physical relaxation and gentle mood elevation, without the cost of a clear, calm mind.”

6. Cannatonic
Cannatonic isn’t nearly as sedative as the name implies. This strain usually brings a smaller CBD/THC split, ranging from 5:1 down to 1:1. This even-keeled cannabinoid profile gives consumers a great deal of flexibility to use Cannatonic as medicine or as an enjoyable, mild mannered strain to unwind with.

7. Harle-Tsu
Harle-Tsu, one of a few lovingly handcrafted strains created by the late Lawrence Ringo, is an outstandingly functional CBD cut. By combining Harlequin and Sour Tsunami, Harle-Tsu achieves a pleasant disposition without encumbering the consumer with strong sedation.

8. Canna-Tsu
Canna-Tsu is a more balanced CBD/THC strain that offers a unique bouquet of smells. With aromas of citrus and sweet earth, Canna-Tsu gives the CBD enthusiast a complex palate of flavor and terpenes to enjoy.

9. Sour Tsunami
Created by the larger-than-life grower and activist Lawrence Ringo, Sour Tsunami was brought into being by combining Sour Diesel and NYC Diesel. This unlikely pair of stimulating plants bred the high-CBD phenotype that has since redefined the medicinal qualities of cannabis.

Bonus staff review: “This strain has become a household name among high-CBD strains. This variety tends to produce less than 1-2% of THC, so you can reap its medicinal benefits without the high. Sour Tsunami is fairly prolific, so keep an eye out for this strain at your next dispensary visit if you’re looking to quell pain or anxiety symptoms without the interference of THC.”

10. Pennywise
Pennywise certainly has the scariest of all the names that made this list, or at least it does for those familiar with the Stephen King book responsible for its namesake. But fear not, Pennywise truly gets its name from its genetic cross of Harlequin and Jack the Ripper. It synthesizes Jack the Ripper’s mental clarity and an even 1:1 CBD/THC to make a strain that is functional and enjoyable at almost any dose.

About the only one on that list I'd want is the ACDC at 20:1.

I'm old and been a stoner for 50 years. It's good edible medicine I'm after now for my achy joints etc.

Still growing the high THC stuff but mostly to make RSO with for friends and family and can blend in the CBD stuff to adjust the buzz.

The buzz from a nice 3:1 is really good tho. More like being tipsy on booze and puts a stupid grin on my face and happy in my heart so really good for my chronic depression too.

I have a bunch of different CBD strains to grow out yet and one big plant outside with a couple weeks to go yet and should yield a good pound. Not bad for northern Alberta with frost already a few times.

Some good stuff in that list for sure.

:peace:

What CBD strains do you have to grow out?

I like 3:1's also. I am in the process of figuring out breeding so I can attempt to make my own at various ratios but I am in the works of finding a lab for testing. A mother/clone area would help too =]

I have Nurse Lily. I am pretty sure this is what I will be growing next season. I have some GG4 and a bunch of other seeds but most of those are going to my dad.

I finished a CBD Mango Haze not long ago. First grow, lots of mistakes - nute def, over/under watering and probs others I don't even know about. I got a half ounce dry off a plant that was under two foot so I am not complaining to much. I wont smoke that before next season so I will be sharing with the homeless.

That was for @OldMedUser BUT I will reply back as any response is helpful =] I am assuming OMU just hasn't seen it yet lol.

I'm not a fan of ACDC but that could be because I have only tried it in vape form from dispensaries. It's to heavy for me. Harle - Tsu was okay bit I prefer harlequin as it's more active and happy to me. I am liking this CBD Mango Haze (a vape from Select is what got me started with it) BUT I def could have harvested sooner as it has more of a body effect to it than I feel it should.

I can't wait to try this Nurse Lily and I am a bit skeptical of the other being a pure CBD but I knew that going in. My list of CBD gear is long but I will try to keep basic journals here if time allows, which I hope it does.

I have Nurse Lily and Dr Seedsman. I am pretty sure this is what I will be growing next season. I have some GG4 and a bunch of other seeds but most of those are going to my dad.

I have a few but not widely known in the commercial sense.

My fave is Sebrings Revenge and I have the latest F4 iteration of it. Will be planting some ASAP. Like 20% CBD and 2 - 4% THC. It makes the best cocobudder I've ever used. A tsp in the evening is good for my whole next day for pain relief from advanced arthritis. Sleep like a baby too.

PM me if you want a link to his website. Mr. 420 has made it very clear that I not give out the forum Sebring hangs out at and I totally respect his wishes and the website has zero links to any other forum.

He's based in WA, USA but all his shipments to me made it no problem. Zero dollars for the seeds but pay for shipping. My last order got me 30 seeds of the F4 Revenge and 25 of the Heirloom Maui Wowie, Cherry Bomb Pheno for $20CAN

The order before that got me 179 seeds of the hi-CBD Double Ought Cherry reg photo in two little containers I didn't even ask for but they came along with the Dragon Heart I ordered. Sebring and I have a pretty much solid relationship so I guess he tossed me a huge bone. I got to share out most of what I've got from him and the few thousand other decent seeds I've got from my own efforts and great people I've met on this and other forums the last dozen years. I meant to ship him half of everything I have in time for Xmas but like usual I procrastinated but they will get there before long and he'll put them up on his site.

He does this with all sorts of vegetable seeds to preserving heirloom genetics and gives all this stuff away too. I cannot say enough good things about this man.

A couple of pics of that hi-CBD girl I grew outside this year. It's the Sebring Earth Lover and was supposed to be an auto fem but grew as a photo fem. I kept her out there under blankets in the snow with a heater but had to crop her earlier than I wanted too and still got 3/4 of a pound off her calculated by wet weight x 0.25. Shitload of sugar trim too all stored in sealed cans in my freezer. I make a fresh harvest cocobudder from this stuff and decarb in the process so all the terpenes etc are preserved.

5ft tall here.

Keeping her warm here.

I have a plant from a cutting I took off her so once I've grown one to harvest indoors I'll send a sample to a lab I know of that only charges $60 for a THC/CBD test and is Hellth Canaduh certified.

I'm trying to make fem seeds using STS so may have lots by spring I hope.

You have a lot of seeds my friend =] That's intense the plant survived the snow!

I can def get behind someone who preserves heirloom genetics of anything! Is that maui wowie x cherry bomb cbd dom or thc dom? Do you know where to get some Cherry Wine seeds? I am looking for cherry and strawberry terps. Tikal seems to be where it is for strawberry and Very Cherry(can't find a source) seems to be ideal for cherry. I would just like to try Cherry Wine. I'll be playing with my own ideas for CBD ratios thanks for the potential plug though. I just have so many ideas that I want to stay on track so I actually start...

Let me know how that STS fem seed trial goes.

Most of this stuff needs growing out and evaluation. I'm sure Sebring does his best but like the crosses I've made it's up to each of us to grow them out and choose the best for our individual situations and needs.

The 4 Sebrings Revenge that I have grown out were early versions and supposed to be regulars but all came up girls. The very best medicine I've ever had but very low yields. An oz and a half/plant. Now I have the F4s so we shal see.

Here's a pic of what I have of his stuff. I want to grow out some of those heirloom Maui Wowie ASAP but I have so many others that are not his I want to grow too. So many strains, so little time!

Oldest on the left to the newest.

Big surprise! I too am trying out some full cbd or 1:1 &1:2 seeds. I've grown erdpurt and used it in crosses already. I have one thcv strain that's 1:1 with cbd and thcv, durban. I believe one is based on some tsunami and has his diesel mix in it which is 1:1. There is one with cannatonic x afghan erdpurt that is 20:1 and should taste like tangerines. This and thcv will be grown first, asap. Another is 30:1 and we're freebies from seedsman last month. It's apparently some Chinese cbd or something. I truly am excited to try these out as I have been buying cbd flowers and would love to do my own so I can make lotions and all other type of meds for myself and friends that need a lower if any thc strain.

Check out Elite Seeds Novarine. It sounds interesting but the mota khan stops me as I'm not really an indica guy. Though my next seed purchase will have Bubba Kush CBD and maybe OG Kush CBD from Dinafem. I figured I could start with a CBD version of an indica and go from there.

I have grown Dancehall and use it in a tincture with Romulan grapefruit for my wife's back pain. I use three parts dancehalls and one part rg and it helps her go to work every day. I tested the strains I grew myself using the lyes test or the beam test and found my Bubba Hash from ACE has a high level of cbd! I'm keeping her going as a mom for three years now. I will be growing out the rest of my dance hall seeds and keeping seeds. A good friend took some of my seeds and made f2s he uses dancehalls every day for his arthritis.

I will be purchasing some Ace gear VERY soon. I have a CBD project I would like to do and would love to support a company that I can stand behind their model. I was looking at BK X PCK or Bubba Hash but I think I am leaning towards the PCK cross. Please explain these tests to me as the person that was going to test my grows seems to have fallen off the earth. Also Qutrovarin from Elite may be of interest.
