My current assumption is that the plant is letting them die, drawing what goodness she can from them and reusing for more productive growth. So will leave them for now.

It really is up to you on my last plant i cut off a few bottom fan leaves to unblock the lower buds. The other smaller leaves literally covered and completely complicated for any lost. But if you're planning to cut them off do it slowly over a week or two maybe a leaf every few days. The way i figured it if in the wilderness it would lose a couple every now and then so it shouldn't hurt it none.
Careful with nuts ur soil should have enough for 3weeks then start lite they are very sensitive but they will get huge mine are all 3to4ft tall
