Most likely works the way most aero cloners work I built a few from ice chest so they are designed to hold water and to maintain temps better. The most likely cause of the ones with the air stone taking longer is that there is not enough surface disruption i.e. the waters not splashing onto the plants with the air bubbles rise to the top.
