My Search For Sundrops

So, after a few grows and feeling more comfortable with growing and my rig dialed in, I think it is time for me to start focusing on my real goals in growing. I feel that everyone who uses cannabis medicinally should focus on cultivars that work best for thier individual body chemistries. In that end, it would be preferable to look for existing cultivars that work for you, but in my case I am growing for my wife and myself.

After alot of "testing" (smoking😉) we have been able to pinpoint specific genetics that gel for her, gel for me, and gel for us. This also opened up our eyes to the fact that different cultivars can bring different primary affects that are wanted, but also some secondary affects that we don't. That is when I started looking as the idea of crossing our own cultivars with specific outcomes in tune with our endocannabinoid systems.

The first step is finding a base parent that gels for both of us universally. Luckily, we found a regular pack and a fem pack with genetics that work from Greenpoint seeds. These being: Purple MAC (MAC 1 x Purple Punch) x MACdawg (MAC x Stardawg)

MAC 1 and Purple punch were both identified early on, and since Stardawg is a Chemdawg backcross, that also is a favorite. For differing reasons, these three cultivars work for both my wife and I, but not totally. It is our hope that by crossing these cultivars we can find a foundational piece that we can build from. Nobody likes to smoke one strain all the time!😉

After flipping the Trainwreck I grew for the @420 @Canuk Seeds comparative grow, I grew out a 10 pack of Greenpoint seeds MACdawg and had 6 sprout. 1 showed defects and was culled, 5 were flipped to flower. Because of indecision on my part, 3 were germinated first and the other two were planted 3 weeks later. The 3 more mature plants showed female sex within one week of flip to 12/12. #7 just showed pistils and #9 is looking like a male

The plan is to pollenate one branch on each female, select the favorite after "testing," and choose that mother's seeds to select F2s. The reason for not directly pollinating the Purple MAC is to hopefully get a larger pool of males to select from and to also test what this father will pass on. Phenotypically, #3 and #9 are very similar, #4 is in between #5 and #3, and #5 and #7 look more Stardawg to me. We will smoke them all and judge by that rather than phenotypic expression.

Why Sundrops? General naming conventions would be to name it something like "Purple MACdawg," but I am not necessarily looking to cross for a specifically purple cultivar. One of my pet peeves is buying a "purple" strain and it being green😜 So why Sundrops? My wife's name means Sun in Hmong, and I used to try to dabble at rapping under the moniker of 1Drop.... so, Sundrops!

That's it for now, this will be a long journey that I plan to devote my upcoming grows to. I will look to familial breed to F4, then reverse the best F4 female to the F3 mom. That would be an F4S1 or basically a feminized IBL right?😉

I hope you'll follow along and help guide me if you have suggestions. Take care my friends, and as always, be water....

Sounds interesting and I hope 🤞 you find the perfect match. CL🍀. :thumb: :cheer:

So, instead of crossing Purple MAC with MACdawg..... my wife has suggested to cross Trainwreck with MACdawg. Our stash was getting low, so we may or may not have sampled some of our last grow already😉

Through our "testing" I've been recording how different cultivars affect us and steer bud and now seed choices by those results. As an added bonus for myself, I get to put my inputs into that way. Researching more, I think breeding to find a terpinolene dominant cultivar would be something worthwhile with my family's medical history.

Here's the MACdawg females:

And #9 our MACdawg male:

Pollen sacks are starting to form, I switched him to 11/13 to try and help speed up flower a little more.

Just thought I'd give a quick update, I will not be pollenating #7. I didn't take a picture, but I found a ball where I tried to pluck her fan leaf. Full disclosure, I tried to pinch it ploff, sucker was big so I didnt pinch through and stripped her trunk a little. Decent accidental stress test I guess, but i have did some heavy high stress defol and training on the others, so good to know at least.

Took off a couple fans from the male #9. 11 fingers, I'd say he's a healthy guy😉

I think that one of the biggest mistakes society makes regarding cannabis is that THC is recreational and CBD is medicinal only. You have no idea how many times I've had to explain how the thc benefits my ptsd and depression. What makes it worse, California's updated laws makes being a medical user obsolete.

That is really the reason why I am trying to develop a cultivar that works for my family. I think everyone should, think about any other hobby fruit or vegetable farmer that eventually works a line to an exceptional tomato or eggplant, etc. My hypothesis, and it's really more of a wild hair up my ass, but I believe that the continual hybridization with ruderalis, feminizing without stabilizing, and chucking F1 to F1s is what has exacerbated the amount of mutations seen and documented.

Look at it this way, if every home grower (that had the time, space, and know how) bred and grew their own distinct cultivars, the genetic pool would begin to be refreshed and I think we would see a great improvement to this beloved plant.

Of course, I do smoke ALOT 😜, and who am I to make such claims? Nobody, that's who I am, just a guy growing a plant and loving every moment of it.

I hope you all have a wonderful day, and as always, stay water my friends

So, little update on the parental search, I've been looking at Agseedco for a while now, and with thier buy 2 get 1 free, figured I pull the trigger on 2 crosses to use for 2 different projects.

First will be two packs of Todd's Trainwreck/NL5 to breed for Sundrops. The way Maximus is looking, I might just use his pollen and then IBL the MACdawg in the future.

Second, I pick was for Todd's (ON Haze/Original Haze x NL2). I have the seeds I "made" from the Strawberry Fantasy grow. I liked it, a nice OG type high with an interesting flavor, but for me it lacked the heady aspect useful for my PTSD. So we will also be looking for a male to cross with the Strawberry Fantasy to make The FOG. I'll also continue an IBL program for the ON/Og Hazes x NL2

So, this is what I'm going to be devoting thr next couple of years of my life to:

Sundrops = Trainwreck/NL5 (Agseedco) x MACdawg (Greenpoint seeds)

The FOG = Strawberry Fantasy (Bodhi) x (ON Haze/Original Haze x NL2) (Agseedco)

Also, still liking the Purple MAC idea... maybe Purple MAC x MACdawg, and I will call it Violet Rain....🤔

The names all have significance with my family. Well, that's it, have a great one!

Happy Sunday 420mag! A quick update on the tents.

I'll let him go as long as I can, wish I could grow full term, but I'll have to kick him out at start the next cycle at some point.

Now for the Ladies!!!!!

They are between 30-36 inches from pot. I was hoping for around 4ft plants, might just get there!

My wife named the females, I named Maximus (picture the gladiator scene with them cheering for Russel Crowe every time I open his tent!🤣)

But I think she was trying M names since they are MACdawg, lol! Honestly, just easier than trying to explain by number to her😜

A quick update on the MACdawg, my seeds from Agseedco should be arriving today. Todd McCormick seems like a awesome guy, and very responsive. So excited to run his gear!

Let's go ladies first:

A couple sacks are starting to open, looks like I'll be collecting and dusting by end of week.

20240220_084048.jpg

Well, that's it for now. I plan to collect pollen and then dust the females 3 times every 3 days, more than likely starting Friday.

So, alot of people dont like to make or post thier plans, be it for whatever reason, but I'm not doing this for commercial gain, but for discovery and some good cannabis for me and my fam.

There are alot of different ways that I could approach my end goals, but I think growing and getting to know what I want to make is the best bet. In that vein, I have come up with a grow plan for the next 10/11 cycles that will hopefully find me Sundrops, but will also potentially find some other gems along the way.

This will be a long journey, literally years, but I don't plan on quitting growing or consuming cannabis any time soon, so I plan to just enjoy the ride
