New digital ballast making high pitched noise?!

Anyone had an issue where a new ballast is making a high pitch noise whenever a bulb is lit?

It is a 1000w digital which can be switched between 400, 420, 600, 630, 1000, etc. and the built in odometer confirms that it is in fact new. It is from one of the major manufacturers, not some chinese knockoff POS.

The noise happens at all wattage settings, and with multiple wattage MH and HPS bulbs that work fine on another ballast from the same manufacturer.

The noise sometimes alternates between pitches, but can be heard from across the room. My other ballast only puts off a quiet buzz sound that can only be heard when you get close to it.

Any thoughts?

Re: New digital ballast making high pitched noise?!?

It is faulty , it may be a loose component or Cap , diode or similar part that is Vibrating , much like what happens with TV's when they emit a high pitched sound or buzzing.

although it may be the fan if it has one. Either way return it for a refund or exchange as it will only get worse not better.

Sometimes you can tap things with a hammer to temporarily silence a buzz, not too hard or it could stop working..

Do not use much force if you do try a hammer and do not damage the case or the return may be compromised.. sorry for the blunt force advice :tommy: but its a common technique.

Often with noisy TV's you whack them on the side or top and they quiet down , although temporarily. Replace that noise maker is my advice.
