My MH blew out a month ago... I forgot and will assume that it is an open faced MH ( not vented). So you may be right about the heights... Use your hand to gauge the heat.. If they start stretching then lower the light a little bit.. otherwise try to get some fans in there for circulation and do the best you can with the heat.

I let the temp tell me how high above the canopy.. I keep my 400 from 6-12 inches away... Get a thermo and put it at the same level as your canopy. Then you can dial the light height, in tune with the temps you want.. (try to stay under 80). You gotta try and remember that inside of two feet from the light source is optimal for lumens...
