Companion plants for roses.
Chives
Garlic
Leeks
Onion
Shallot
These are all excellent protection against black spot, aphids, and many othe pests.
All have beautiful greens, when the chives go to seed they flower a nice purple.
And you can EAT THEM ALL. Wooohoo!!!!
There is also an ornamental onion called Pink Curly Onion. Perennial too. Great ground cover drought tolerant.
I could go on for ever LOL.

I grow onions around everything. I don't think rabbits like to cross them - and then I don't have to shoot them.

What about mint? Any reason not to have mint near roses (other than when you turn your back it goes everywhere)?

Nope mint is great but like you said turn your back and it goes every where. BUT I have had some excellent success with either planting with some type of raised pot landscape barrier to stop the spread of the roots.

Yeah, Mom won't let me plant any at her house because of its spreading nature. In my neighborhood, we just mow it along with the grass it's mixed with. It smells much better than the mower's exhaust, lol.
