The Albanian police this week seized at least two tonnes of cannabis destined for neighbouring Greece, the authorities said Friday.

The drugs were found in Kakome Bay some 240 kilometres (150 miles) to the south of Tirana, close to the border with Greece. They were hidden behind a fake wall in a truck.

Four drug traffickers managed to flee the scene during the operation Wednesday night and police are still trying to catch them, they said.

Since the start of the year, the Albanian police have seized over three and a half tonnes of cannabis mainly destined for Greece and Italy.

Greece is a major market for drugs and illicit weapons smuggled from neighbouring Albania. According to international police reports, Albania has become the main supplier of marijuana to Europe.
