What started out as a simple traffic stop for loud music ended up as a notable drug bust as authorities seized more than two pounds of marijuana late Tuesday afternoon.

DeSoto sheriff’s Deputy Joe West stopped a vehicle driven by Ray Lee Scott, 33, of Mansfield, after receiving a complaint of loud music. Scott pulled into a driveway but ran from the vehicle carrying two brown bags. West and Mansfield police officers chased Scott and finally apprehended him. West received minor injuries to his hand and knee during the pursuit and was treated at DeSoto Regional Health System and released.

The two bags in Scott’s possession contained 2.7 pounds of marijuana that had been broken down and repackaged for individual sales, said DeSoto sheriff’s Lt. Horace Womack, Tri-Parish Drug Task Force supervisor.

Task Force agents are following up on Scott’s arrest. They plan to process all of the evidence for fingerprints and conduct a civil seizure of Scott’s vehicle since it was allegedly used to facilitate a drug sale.

Scott has an extensive arrest record, Womack said, with prior felony convictions for burglary, drugs, domestic violence and resisting an officer. His criminal history record indicates at least 15 prior arrests.

Scott was booked into the DeSoto Detention Center on one count each of possession of marijuana-felony offense; possession with intent to distribute marijuana, second or subsequent drug offenses, resisting and officer and loud music.
