According to The Canadian Association of Medical Cannabis Dispensaries, there are at least 350 storefronts in Canada, with dozens opening in Toronto.

People who oppose these dispensaries want them shut down.

Medical Marijuana advocates are saying the answer to this issue is not to shut down dispensaries but to introduce regulations that will standardize the quality of the product they sell.

Ronan Levy is the Director and General Counsel for Canadian Cannabis Clinics and he tells 570 News the difference between the clinic and a dispensary.

"We have doctors on site to meet with patients, do a proper assessment as to whether Cannabis is a suitable medical option. We then help those patients purchase Cannabis from one of the thirty-one licensed producers approved by Health Canada".

Levy says that if Ottawa decides to legalize Cannabis next year, he doesn't think we will see the end of dispensaries but the government will put heavy regulations on them if they decide to distribute Cannabis through Health Canada.

"I suspect that a new system will impose fairly secure regulations on them in terms of security, quality control and supply management."
