Mercedes Corby, the sister of the jailed drug courier Schapelle Corby, lashed out yesterday at claims by a convicted drug trafficker that he had supplied Mercedes' late father, Michael Corby, with marijuana in a drug operation in which marijuana went from South Australia to Brisbane and ultimately to Bali.

Ms Corby, who has denied involvement by her family in the drug trade, said she was outraged by claims by Malcolm McCauley that he had supplied the 4.2 kilograms of marijuana found on Schapelle at Denpasar airport on October 8, 2004.

She said the claims were "lies", just as Michael Corby's cousin, Allan Trembath, had been lying when he told ABC TV's Lateline that Michael Corby had been involved in marijuana trafficking for decades.

She called on the Australian Federal Police to investigate the claims so her father's and sister's names could be cleared.

Mr McCauley, who served 15 months in jail for his role in a drug syndicate, told The Sun-Herald Michael Corby had an arrangement whereby $1000 cash would be put in the bag containing the drugs. This was to allow corrupt customs officials to pocket the money and wave the drugs through.

Once he had delivered the drugs to Michael Corby, he had no more involvement. But Schapelle had "always known" her father was a drug dealer. She had known how the system worked, including bribery of officials, he said. The system broke down on the day she was caught at Denpasar airport because the money was not there.

Schapelle's mother, Rosleigh Rose, said she had met Mr McCauley in a hotel in Adelaide in 2004 and he had asked to meet Schapelle next time he was in Bali. Mr McCauley has said he visited her 16 days after her arrest to assess the "damage" and protect his position. He made four more trips and visited Schapelle several times.

A spokeswoman for the federal police said the organization was aware of claims in the Sunday media but it was policy neither to confirm nor deny that anyone was being investigated.

this is really a sad story. I saw the documentary of it on HBO and the fact that you can receive the death penalty, which is execution by firing squad, is really quite ridiculous for marijuana smuggling. Too bad his daughter is the one taking all the fault for his drug trafficking ways.
