if i used a regular desk fan and used it the opposite way around as it should be used, would it effectively be exhausting heat? say if i had a hole cut in the wall of my closet and had the fan in the wall blowing out of the closet, would it be effectively exhausting the air inside the closet out through the wall?

Yes, that is the way I had my first grow setup until the odor became too intense. I used a Lasko 6" clip fan which actually has a higher CFM (191) than my current carbon filter/fan combo (130).
