A state-registered medical marijuana grower from Grants Pass was sentenced Monday to a decade in federal prison for drug and gun crimes.
Jason Nelson, 37, was found guilty in June of conspiracy and manufacture of marijuana and possession of unregistered firearms. The jury verdict came after a four-day federal trial.
The investigation into Nelson began last year when authorities in Portland stopped a southern Oregon woman who was attempting to ship 74 pounds of marijuana to the East Coast.
Part of that shipment was traced to Nelson's property, where authorities discovered an elaborate marijuana growing operation. Police also found three machine guns, two silencers, two undersized rifles high-capacity magazines and machine gun parts.
Police also found a shipping container outfitted with grow lights and 162 small marijuana plants.
Evidence at trial indicated Nelson was selling multiple pounds of pot for up to $2,700 a pound.
Selling marijuana is illegal under federal law and under the state's medical marijuana law, which allows growers only to recoup their costs for supplies and utilities.
