Has anybody ever used lighting under their canopy?

I have read a decent amount of the grow threads here at 420mag, but I haven't seen (or maybe just didnt notice) anybody who used extra lighting below their plants canopies. I've been thinking that a couple low heat cfl's or something below the canopy would greatly help buds lower down on the plant to grow, and thus increase a plants overall yeild.

I'm curious for any feedback of people who have done this, or for some reasons why it isn't that good of an idea.

I've supplemented with florescent light from the side... But my understanding is the the photo-reaction occurs on the top surface of the leaf, and gas/moisture absorption on the bottom. Light from the bottom could be wasted.
