Help on light distance

1000 watt hps on 4 plant how high should i keep the light above the plant.

i have it at about 2 feet and my plants look great but someone told me to move the light down because he says " i think the plant can take it and it would increase your yeild". I said why fix what not broke.

should i keep my light where it is at or move it down 6 inches.

I hold my hand at the top of the plants, if it doesnt get too hot after a minute im ok, if im unsure i put a temp meter at the height of my tops just to make sure. I try to keep it as close as possible.

I'll add one thing. Make sure your hand is palm side down. The back of your hand is more sensitive like leaves are.
