A robber who preyed on a London man who needs a wheelchair and is dependent on medicinal marijuana was sent to prison yesterday.
Landen Dagenais, 22, was sentenced to two years in prison on top of 120 days of pre-plea custody.
He pleaded guilty in the Ontario Court of Justice to robbing a couple in their own home of legal marijuana and other valuables during a frightening home invasion on Oct. 19.
Dagenais was one of three men who arrived at the door of a couple's home. The man uses a wheelchair and has Health Canada authorization to grow and possess marijuana.
When the man opened the door, one of the robbers used a crowbar to keep the door open. The three men, all with their faces covered, went into the house.
"Where is your weed?" one of the men asked. The resident said it was in the kitchen freezer.
That marijuana was retrieved, but the men asked for more -- and where the man kept the safe.
One of the men ran downstairs to find the man's wife. She took them to the safe and opened it. There was no money inside.
A large amount of bagged marijuana was taken from a locked freezer as well as a number of plants.
The men took a wedding band, bank card, TV and two laptop computers. They also took three shotguns and a crossbow from a locked cabinet.
Everything was loaded into the couple's van. They were told they would be killed if they tried anything.
The couple was taken downstairs and tied up with plastic ties.
The intruders removed the batteries from a cordless phone and told the couple not to call the police.
After the intruders left, they were able to free themselves and called police.
London police spotted the van a short time later. When it was pulled over, four men got out and ran.
Dagenais and another man were arrested. Two others got away.
The sentence was a joint submission from the Crown and the defence.
