Langley Marijuana Dispensary Raided

Armed with a search warrant, police raided Langley's Medical Marijuana Dispensary of all its cash and drugs Tuesday.

The downtown Langley facility is operated by Randy Caine, owner of two Hempyz novelty stores. He is licensed by Health Canada to provide medical pot, and back on April 1 moved the dispensary services out the back room of his original Fraser Highway store into a secure office space a few blocks away.

All the stock — including the marijuana in various forms — were seized, along with the day's cash. But member files were left untouched and intact, said manager Carol Gwilt.

"This came out of left field," Gwilt said of the RCMP visit, claiming Caine has been working closely with police and municipal officials in opening and operating the facility.

She was told RCMP were acting on a drug trafficking complaint, when they arrived Tuesday and ordered two other people present to leave while asking Caine to remain behind. The facility was then closed down.

The facility has since reopened, but staff are not dispensing product yet, Gwilt said. They were only offering information and consultation as of Thursday, and unclear when they'd be able to restock.

"We just need to regroup," she said. "We aren't a large dispensary... We're just a small community-based dispensary," and loss of the stock leaves them disabled.

Gwilt noted that the entire issue of distributing medical marijuana is a very political issue that is currently being fought at the highest levels of government and court.

But she said it's the chronically and critically ill residents of Langley, those who have been approved to consume marijuana for medical purposes, who are being hurt by this recent complaint and subsequent police raid.

"We'll win this," Gwilt said. "But for now, our clients are forced back to the streets and the back alleys to the unscrupulous drug dealers" to get their "medicine."

Const. Jillian Roberts confirmed the visit, noting police were acting on multiple complaints from the community. But she could not divulge much more information, beyond to say no charges have been laid and Langley RCMP are still investigating the case.
