One end-of-the-year outing for a Worthington man resulted in his arrest after an officer who stopped to offer assistance was met with a billow of marijuana smoke coming out of a parked vehicle.

William M. Dove, Jr., 19, of Worthington, was arrested on Dec. 31 by Jasonville Police Officer Ryan Van Horn and faces preliminary charges of possession of marijuana and reckless possession of paraphernalia -- both of which are class A misdemeanors.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Greene County Superior Court on Monday, the incident took place just after midnight on Dec. 31 when the officer spotted a vehicle parked off of County Road 700 North.

"The dome light to the vehicle was on and I could see several subjects inside the vehicle," Officer Van Horn explains in the written affidavit. "I believed this warranted further investigation to check and make sure the individuals were not having vehicle trouble and also the vehicle was parked near an abandoned sawmill and there have been previous thefts from the property."

Upon approaching the vehicle and making contact with the driver, the officer was met with "a large amount of smoke" -- which the officer believed to be the smell of burnt marijuana, adds the court document.

When asked what was going on, the driver -- who was identified as William M. Dove, Jr. -- told the officer that he and the group were planning on going inside the saw mill to look around, adding he thought the location to be haunted.

Dove then complied when asked to accompany the officer to the patrol car and was read his Miranda rights -- which he waived and then agreed to speak to the officer, says the court document.

Dove was also asked for consent to search his vehicle, but after reading the document he refused to sign it although he agreed for the search to take place, says the affidavit.

During a recorded interview with the officer, Dove admitted to smoking marijuana in the vehicle prior to the officer's arrival. He also told the officer that approximately 14 grams of marijuana and a pipe were located in the center console of the vehicle and that the items in question were his.

Upon search of the vehicle, the officer found in the vehicle's center console the following: a plastic baggy containing green leafy vegetation believed to be marijuana, a glass smoking pipe with burnt residue, and a set of digital scales with a small amount of green vegetation on it.

All other individuals in the vehicle were interviewed at the Jasonville Police Department with all subjects saying that the marijuana and glass smoking pipe belonged to Dove.

Dove was arrested and transported to the Greene County Jail -- where he was later released on a $2,000 bond. An initial hearing has been set for Jan. 14.
