Mexico City — Soldiers found over 22 tons (20 metric tons) of marijuana in a truck hauling boxes of cereal in northern Mexico, the Defense Department reported Friday.

The drugs were found during a routine inspection of the truck earlier this week at a highway checkpoint in the town of Benjamin Hill, Sonora, about 90 miles (150 kms) south of the Arizona border.

Hidden among the cereal boxes soldiers found 3,882 packages containing marijuana, about four pounds (1.8 kilograms) of methamphetamine, and seven assault rifles.

The driver, who was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking and turned over to police, said he had intended to drive the truck to the border city of Tijuana, to the west.
