MSO Finds 80 Pounds of Pot in Fort Bragg Home

A 39-year-old Piercy man who pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana for sale in an alleged Bell Springs Road marijuana deal in April was arrested by police a second time in Fort Bragg last week.

Thomas Ganey, 39, with a Piercy address in the 77200 block of Bear Pen Canyon, Alec Hurst, 24 of Fort Bragg and Jake Hurst, 23, of Fort Bragg were arrested by the Sheriff's Office last Monday.

That day the Sheriff's Office served a search warrant on Happy Lane, Fort Bragg, for suspected marijuana offenses and arrested Ganey, Alec Hurst and Jake Hurst, a report from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office stated.

Sheriff's deputies served a search warrant and discovered about 80 pounds of marijuana, paraphernalia associated with the sales of marijuana and evidence that indicates multiple people were engaged in processing marijuana there, the Sheriff's Office stated.

Alec Hurst was a suspect in a Leggett-area grow on private land. Sheriff's deputies had previously come to the Happy Lane location following up on an investigation into the Leggett grow.

According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies could smell "a strong odor of marijuana, possibly coming from a structure at the location when contacting Hurst that subsequently resulted in obtaining a search warrant."

Alec Hurst, Jake Hurst and Ganey were booked at county jail on suspicion of cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale.

In a case from April 2009, Ganey was arrested along with seven others in an alleged marijuana transaction on Bell Springs Road north of Laytonville.
According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies spotted three vehicles and people and asked if they needed help. Sheriff's deputies smelled marijuana and discovered about 20 pounds of marijuana and $99,000 in cash.

Police booked at county jail, Anthony Gaines, 39, of Los Angeles, and Keren Gaines of Los Angeles who had driven an Acura to the scene. Ganey, XXX, 33, of Joliet, Ill., of Chicago and Demes M. Demes, 28, of Cleveland were in a Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe Stugard, 34, of Garberville, Crystal Robinson, 32, of Fortuna, were in a Toyota Tacoma, the Sheriff's Office stated.

Anthony Gaines and Ganey pleaded guilty and the case was dismissed against Keren Gaines, Nofal, Demes, Stugard and Robinson, according to court records. A preliminary hearing in the April case was scheduled for Nov. 3.

During a search of the Bear Pen Road property this month, Ganey's wife Durena Sue Ganey, 39, was booked at county jail on suspicion of marijuana related charges.

A subsequent case was filed by the District Attorney's Office on Nov. 3, 2009. but was dismissed.

Sheriff's Capt. Kurt Smallcomb said that the Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the Fort Bragg case.
