In Cannabis Culture, April 20th, or 4/20, is traditionally a day to smoke and celebrate marijuana.

Today, one Valley City group used the date to draw attention and support for a hotly contested ballot initiative.

A few dozen marijuana proponents rallied in Valley City to garner support for the Compassionate Care Act.

Almost half of U.S. states already allow medical marijuana, and North Dakota's ballot initiative would allow qualified patients to use cannabis with a doctor's approval.

It looks like a festive front yard barbecue, but this group is occupying the Barnes County Courthouse lawn, putting a different spin on a classic cannabis-related celebration.

"I'm sure there will be a couple of people who will think, 'Oh crazy stoners...' or something like that," said Alex Peterson, rally organizer.

With the clear 4/20 enthusiasm, outfits to match and array of chocolate-covered munchies comes a call to action.

The group is hoping to attract attention and attract support to legalize marijuana in North Dakota.

"There's so many people suffering from diseases and things like that, where it's been proven that medical marijuana can help them in some way, shape or form."

Alex Peterson is hoping to contribute Valley City signatures to statewide petitions.

In order to put the Compassionate Care Act on the November 8th ballot supporters will need more than 13,000 names by July 11th. Right now, petitioners estimate they have around 10,000.

And in Valley City a surprisingly diverse group is signing onto the cause.

"Anybody with bad pain needs it," said Pam Kreidelcamp, Valley City.

This woman dealt with chronic pain for years. And if marijuana was available the couple would have jumped at the chance to try it.

"We never resorted to that," said Mark Kreidelcamp, Valley City. "But if worse came to worst, we would have."

Police watch over this rally, to make sure it didn't escalate, but these demonstrators make it clear they want change, not violence.

"We're very peaceful people and we just want the world to be a better place," said Peterson.

The group was also offering a petition for recreational marijuana. That one only has a tenth of the required signatures to make the ballot.

And the group says it's focusing most of its efforts on medical cannabis, before tackling the next measure.
