Federal and local authorities arrested two men Tuesday and seized nearly 100 pounds of hydroponic marijuana in a raid on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation.

U.S. customs agents and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police arrested Samuel Garrow, Jr., 33, and Timothy Herne, 42, both of Hogansburg, on charges of illegally importing the marijuana.

The combined operation started when a U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft detected a boat traveling across the northern New York border to Canada and then returning. The aircraft was able to track the boat as it landed back in the U.S., and the suspects were observed transferring the bags of marijuana to an all-terrain vehicle before authorities moved in.

Both suspects were to appear before a federal magistrate, said Michael Gilhooly of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security.
