They are 3 inches tall in starter pots

You may want to look into getting them into their final pots sooner rather than later. Some say autos don't like transplants and some say that if the roots feel restricted it can cause them to flower earlier.

Indeed, you should not do any stress to autos. All dammage you do is a minus on the yield. I have one transplanted and one topped, they seem ok but a bit smaller for theyr age..
