Over P700,000 worth of marijuana which was part of collected evidence presented in court were burned by combined police and anti-narcotics authorities at the Provincial Capitol here the other day.

The burning of the illegal hemp was witnessed by stakeholders and done in the presence of Judge Marybelle Demot-Marinas, of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 8 which is the designated special drugs court in this province.

The marijuana haul had been seized by combined police operatives and anti-narcotics agents in numerous anti-drug operations in the towns of La Trinidad, Tublay, Kibungan, Kapangan and Atok over the past several months.

Republic Act (RA) 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Law mandates the destruction of seized illegal drugs in the presence of stakeholders upon orders of the designated special drugs court in the concerned locality.

The destruction of the seized illegal drugs serves as a warning to future marijuana cultivators and dealers not to be involved in the illegal drug trade since they stand to face stiffer penalties that could jeopardize their situation.

While the Cordillera serves as the major source of marijuana being circulated in the different parts of Asia because of its high grade, the court cited the relentless anti-drug operation of law enforcement agencies is helping reduce the illegal hemp being distributed in different parts of Asia which could put to risk their health and economic conditions.
