question about light

i have a 400 w mh light and my seedling is starting to stretch its maybe 3 feet from the light, should i put it maybe 1 foot away to keep it from stretching and falling over?

3 feet seems a long distance but I use Floro for my starter/veg areas

What are your temps? Light and dark cycle?
stretch can also be strain related(tryin' to grow an outdoor strain indoors) and/or heat related.

the light and plants are way too far apart and that's why the stretch...18 inches would be more like it. Got a fan blowing on them? a good strong wind blowing around will toughen up the stems and make them stand up straight.
