Showtime Cultivating 'Weeds'

Los Angeles - Showtime is high on "Weeds."

The pay cable network has given a 10-episode order to an envelope-pushing comedy series about a housewife-turned-pot dealer starring Mary-Louise Parker.

"Weeds" centers on a suburban mom, played by Parker, who turns to selling pot to make a living after her husband dies unexpectedly.

Even as she embarks on her new career in the underground economy in the fictional California town of Agrestic, Parker's character struggles to maintain outward appearances as a responsible mother and PTA member. Elizabeth Perkins co-stars as the uptight head of the PTA, while Kevin Nealon plays one of the town's city council members.

"Weeds" was one of the six pilots -- three comedies and three dramas -- that Showtime Networks entertainment president Robert Greenblatt greenlighted in May. Greenblatt said he expected to pick a total of three or four projects as series.

Set to debut in late spring or early summer, "Weeds" made the cut because of its offbeat sensibility, one that could play only on pay TV, Greenblatt said.

"It just feels unlike anything else out there," he said. "It's ironic because there is some audacious subject matter in it with respect to selling of the marijuana, yet it also has a lot of heart and a lot of family values. I think it's a really complex and interesting comedy for us."

"Weeds" hails from creator/executive producer Jenji Kohan. Brian Dannelly, who recently worked with Parker in the satirical comedy "Saved!" directed the pilot and will serve as a producer on the series.
