A state trooper has been suspended without pay after his arrest by Maryland State Police Wednesday night on drug charges.

The trooper is identified as Trooper First Class Steven W. Spoonire, 36, of Frederick County, MD.

He is charged with manufacturing a controlled dangerous substance, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The investigation began Wednesday when members of the Frederick County Drug Task Force received information indicating that marijuana may be growing outside Spoonire's single-family home where he lives with his wife and two children.

Police began an investigation that resulted in the service of a search and seizure warrant at Spoonire's home Wednesday evening.

The investigation and subsequent search were conducted by police from the Frederick County Drug Task Force, the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, and Maryland State Police from the Frederick and Westminster barracks. During the search, police found a cultivated suspected marijuana plant about two feet tall growing near the back door of the home.

Police found drug paraphernalia and suspected marijuana seeds inside the home.

Spoonire was arrested by state police at his home at about 8:00 p.m. He was taken to the Frederick County Central Booking Center for processing and to await an initial appearance before a court commissioner.

As a result of the arrest and felony charge, a state police supervisor suspended Spoonire without pay.

Spoonire has been a trooper with the state police for 16 years. He had been assigned to road patrol duties at the Westminster Barracks.

One day when the jails are all full and our tax money will not pay for us all to be in jail. Someone will listen and stop this dumb ass war on drugs. All it does is put good people in jail.
