Teen Who Died After Taser Shot Had Marijuana

A 17-year-old who died after a police officer shocked him with a stun gun last week had marijuana hidden in his socks. And according to a search warrant, he'd been asked to leave the Food Lion where he worked before police arrived. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Officer Jerry Dawson Jr. used his Taser after police received a disturbance call about 1:15 p.m. Thursday from the grocery store on Prosperity Church Road. Darryl Turner had worked in the University City store for about a year as a cashier and bagger. It's unclear why, but the warrant said a customer service manager had asked Turner to leave and he refused.

Last week, Turner's mother, Tammy Fontenot, told the Observer that she didn't know of any problems her son had with drugs or alcohol. On Monday night she declined to comment about the search warrant that said officers found three small bags of marijuana in one of Turner's socks. They also searched his Green Ford Escort to look for drugs or other impairing substances but seized no items, according to the document.

"Our focus has continued to be on what the officer was confronted with at the scene," said Ken Harris, the family's attorney. "That will continue to be the focus and some of the more recent information may or may not be relevant to that."

Family members and co-workers said Turner, who graduated last year from a charter high school and planned to attend college, was a good student and reliable employee. His court record consists of three traffic offenses.

His mother said her son had a temper but was not violent. She did say that Turner had come home for lunch Thursday and told her he had stolen a couple of Hot Pockets from the store. He was afraid of getting in trouble, she said, but she told him to go back to the store and admit what he did.

Police received the disturbance call soon after. As Dawson arrived at the store, police said, an "agitated" Turner threw something at a manager. Turner ignored Dawson's commands and advanced toward him. Dawson then used the Taser to get him under control, police said. Turner was later pronounced dead at Carolinas Medical Center-University. His death is the first Taser-related fatality in CMPD's history. Preliminary autopsy results show no obvious cause of death, the medical examiner's office said.

Turner will be buried Friday at Crown Memorial Park after a noon visitation and 1 p.m. service at Temple Hurch International, 3201 Tuckaseegee Road.

Police have declined to give details about the incident. A spokeswoman said Monday the 911 tape recording and police radio transmissions are still being reviewed.
Dawson, a 15-year veteran, is on administrative leave pending an internal investigation, as is routine when someone dies in police custody. Homicide detectives also are investigating the death and will present their findings to the district attorney.

Co-workers and friends said they never knew of Turner being reprimanded at work. Customers described him as "mannerly" and "pleasant." But he had disagreements with the same customer service manager, who had asked him to tuck in his shirt, said Mitch Hecht, 20, an office assistant at the store. The customer service manager had complained about Turner wearing gold teeth and big earrings, he said.

Why don't they have a independent investigation, instead they have there own department investigating the death... that is fucking bullshit they will only cover there ass in this and make there buddy look good...

So fucking what 15-year veterans don't fuck up,I bet he is getting paid on administrative leave how much is 17-year-old Turner getting paid now...?

thats just fucked the kid died over pot

That has NEVER been stated, if anything he was tasered for not tucking in his shirt and then throwing something at some asshole store manager who does not like kids somewhat "counter culture" fashion sense.

Either way it did not warrant a tasering, too many dumb ass cops around.

Yeah, it just said he had some trees in his shoe...

Either way you slice it, some of the people that have sworn to protect us, get a little power hungry and start to go overboard.

Its a shame..

And he probably never had any pot on him at all! The pig probably either planted it or is completetly lying about finding it because he knows his ass is in hot water so that would be his only option to kind of deter ALL of the attention on him and put some back on the kid. Well you killed the kid you freaking asshat and I really hope you burn for it!!!!!!!!!!

I think the cops need to send all those tazer guns back to the manufacturer, then return that $$$ to the people.

Right Herb,if they had their tasers taken away and given a second night stick, and taught the proper way to use, this senseless loss of life wouldn't be happening to harmless people.I've never (even in movies) seen a cop hold a night sick the right way.Night sticks are basically Tonfa's a old oriential weapon. When held the right way and used in both hands the tonfa protects the underside of the forearm, and can be used to reflect anything short of a bullet. Also the end extends past the hand making any punch pack one hell of a Punch,it also extends past the elbow doubleing the striking possibilities. If the money spent on one taser was used on proper training an entire preceint of cops could be trained properly, saving countless lifes.

I've still been hearing of cops that are killing people with the tazers. I think that the police are too quick to give up on the talking to someone and tazer them. The tazers where designed to be a last case weapon that can be used by police officer. The police haven't been using them that way though. I think that police should have an outside investigation (including members of the public) whenever a tazer is used. I think this would put a stop to police using excessive force with the tazers. Just my thoughts????

I noticed a few people have said that the cop was a 15 year vet and why can't he just take the kid down?
From my years of boxing I know that 1 good hit (even from a little guy) is all it takes to KO someone. Some 15 year olds are BIG and I am 5'9" 240#'s myself. With that said I can understand why the cop didn't get physical with the kid. My question is did the cop tazer the kid ONLY after every other possible attempt to defuse the situation failed? Just because the cop may be autherized to use force dosen't mean he has to. I would also like to know if the cop had been properly trained with that tazer? You can't just hold the trigger on it and fry someones ass.

I think that tazers are a GREAT idea for cops as it gives them a less then deadly force alternitive (in most cases). The problem lies in the fact that cops are too fast to pull a tazer. It should only be pulled as an alternitive to a firearm. Not just because someone is pissing them off and they want to teach that person a lesson.

I'M NOT DEFENDING THE COPS. One night I was drunk and walked away from a cop who had pulled me over. I got back in my car with the cop yelling at me the whole time. Stupid me went to get a pack of smokes out of the glove box. Guess what??? I got my ass tazered. Now thinking back.... That cop could have shot and killed me and been within the law. Tazers can be a good thing.

Again, just my thoughts...
