Yep, the birds use the white tips. I have a small but dense bush out the back door that the cardinals and wrens use for nesting. When I trim it up in the fall I always find a couple in each nest. I talked to the Bird man at the local zoo and he said he sees it all the time and they do it for pest control. It seems to work well on mites or so he tells me. Maybe that's why Grandpa spit his chewy tobacco into the rain barrel. Big ass load of Redman!
