they would need to be pollinated to seed, if not, they would remain small buds

Some plants will "throw out bananas" - another way of saying that, as a last ditch effort to perpetuate their lineage, a female plant may grow a male flower within the female bud, releasing pollen onto the female pistils and allowing fertilization and seed growth to occur.
I'd love to see this as an experiment.
