Aero/ebb & flow recommendations

OK folks, all my stuff has arrived....the Rain Forest 66, the Connoisseur A and B nutes, the Milwaukee 802 meter, and of course lighting (600 watt HPS).

In order to minimize the error in my trial and error for this first hydroponic grow, I have a few more questions:

1. The nutrients. I assumed you used A for vegetative phase, and B for flowering, and that the nutrients were concentrates that were diluted with water. The label on the bottles says otherwise, "Connoisseur is an ultra premium two part bloom phase fertilizer to be applied to plant roots via hydroponics irrigation. Blend equal amounts of part A and part B until the proper nutrient strength is reached. Do not mix as a concentrate. Add part A, ahen add part B, to the reservoir."

Bump, looks like Frosty answered the Nute questions!

-Does this mean that I need to get 17 gallons of this stuff in order to fill the reservoir??

-Also, is "bloom fertilizer" not used for vegetative phase and do I need to buy something else?

-How do I properly titrate this stuff for proper growth,?

-Does the ratio of A to B stay at 1 to 1 throughout the grow?

2. The Milwaukee 802 pH and PPM, EC meter. The meter came with foil packets with calibration solutions. I understand that part, I think. Once calibrated, it seems that the instructions advise that the probe must keep kept in water, even when not in use. Must I really keep this think immersed in water all the time?? If so, do I use tap water, distilled water?

L. I keep mine in a half glass of tap water. If you let the probe dry out, which you can, you'll need to calibrate more frequently, and it decreases the life of the probe

3. I'm not clear on how I should be monitoring and adjusting nutrient strength (PPM)

Bump, Frosty.

4. Last but not least, the logistics of getting started. I believe I rinse off the hydroton pebbles thoroughly and then place them in the baskets. Do I use the coco tek liners and lids? I think they're just for cuttings, not for starting with seeds, as I will be doing.

Roger on the Hydroton wash! Just rinse until no more red clay is showing in your runoff. A food colander, large strainer works well.

The liners go first into the NetPots, then the Hydroton, then your grow plug, what are you placing your seed into?. Finally the lids go on after you have a seedling. The lids prevent algae from growing on the top of the Hydroton by blocking the light.

Then I guess I put a seed in each basket, 1/4 inch below the surface and go to town.

Whoa. This may be where my shipped EcoGrower is a little different than what you received (as far as supplies provided). When you say, you put the seed in each basket, what do you mean by that? Did the unit come with some grow-plugs of some sort? You'll notice the grow plug under the CocaTek lid in the following picture.

See this picture for example.

Do I run this thing 24/7?

You'll need to run the it probably 24/7, until roots are established to your water level, and can drink for themselves. But I would look at the manual a little for the Rainforest, because I was using a drip system, and yours is aeroponic, so perhaps a little different pumping schedule.

Sheesh, this is quite a project! But what could be more worthwhile? ;-)

It's a project the first time, but you'll be a pro in short order. I'm confident.

There are no grow plugs in my kit. It comes with 3 part nutes, hydroton, and coco tec baskets and lids, plastic baskets and the reservoir, and vortex pump/spray mechanism. Maybe I have to check with the manufacturer about whether some sort of grow plug is needed. Otherwise I'll have to buy grow plugs or find out if there's a DIY version.

Thanks, as always for your help.

I've yet to find a perfect grow plug to just drop in Hydroton like I did with the picture above. I had some left over from one of those AeroGrow machines that I purchased. I never looked to see if you can purchase just those plugs from the AeroGrow website. They worked well for this unit with Hydroton. Coco Plugs, just dissolve and I've found them to be worthless. I don't know what most of the Deep Water Culture guys are using, perhaps they'll chime in with suggestions!

Currently, I'm trying Sure To Grow 2" starter cubes. Here's the process.
1st Grow - Ebb-N-Grow : Afghan Kush, White Widow, Bag Seed!

Depending on what you decide to use for plugs, or starting media will determine how you germinate the seeds. Whether directly in the medium, or on a paper towel, then transferred to the medium (like my example above).

Hope this makes sense?

You guys are the best. I appreciate all the good advice. I am fascinated by the Deep Water Culture work in progress which Roseman is demonstrating. I think the Rainforest 66 may just be the ticket for me. Larger pots , simple design, and not too expensive.

I am still trying to resolve some of my lighting problems. I have a 600 watt HPS lamp/reflector that I'm using currently with plants grown in pots with dirt. It seems like the light is possibly too hot and the plant seems to wilt, even at distances for about 2 feet from the highest leaves. If I raise the lamp to the ceiling, seems like the illumination is perhaps not strong enough. Of course, it may be other things like the soil mixture itself, which i'm sure should have had more perlite and some sand. I do keep a fan running and I can hold my hand at plant height with no problem from lamp heat.

Lastly, I know the recommendation is for different nutes in vegetative and flowering stages. What's your favorites? I'm sitting on some killer seeds and itching to go.....Thanks again for all your help.

I always found that when not using cooled lamps and using horizontal bulb that you always have to keep a fan over top of you plants to keep them ok..if your handy they're easy to change over as I have found they work better vertical and you can keep the plants right under the light and you get more coverage too...what are your room temps like?

Hi Led,

I think that most of troubles were related to an infestation with spider mites that I didn't recognize right away. After treating them, things have been going more smoothly.

My cousin is a fan of your vertical system. He has a fluorescent "vortex" that he built to surround his pots and he's had pretty good success. I think my HPS lamp is working well now that I have it at about 2' over the tops and the mites are gone. HPS throws out a lot of lumens compared the fluorescent, and the higher levels of heat seem to be manageable.

My room temp is like the rest of my home, about 70 degrees F. A little cooler than optimum, but I am too old to go around without a shirt ;-)

Hey SF that stuff looks enteresting...I have found rockswool to be the least amount of work and probably best for me anyways at being able to control the medium....Done dirt, hydrotron, and this new method of cubes on slabs seems to work good and you can cut the slabs for better control of your plants to.....of course it's not for all though!
Hey Lassus notice how close my buddy can keep the lights ....

RW is good. Mix up some ph'd water 6.0 and soak RW for a few hours. Then your ready to go. RW cubes start at 1" and go up to slabs. Paper towel method, then cut RW cubes in half and place seedling, then you can rubber band the halves together and stick in your clay. Or keep sizing up RW cubes until the desired size. Hit up youtube and search for just about anything and you'll get plenty of visual info.

lassus,

I wanna wish you luck. I choose ebb and flow everytime. no fuss, no leaks, great success. I also use th eadvanced nutes Dutch Master Gold series, and probably will never use anything else. never a problem with this "pornstar" blend of expensive nutes. they work. nice. in the long run it's really peanuts compared to the nugs you'll get.

SF, Thanks for the tip. I just finished reading 13 pages posted by Bolivar

1st Grow, RainForest 318, 400W HID, Chronic Haze, Yumbolt47, California Dream
I'll read Dogstick's next!

I posted on his thread too. Take a peek and tell me what you think.

OK. It's been a good day....I finally put air in my bicycle tires and took a ride. I'm trying to see if I can restore my waistline to under 40" one day.....The shock of physical exertion to my body left me nearly too tired for a cocktail when I got home, but a cuban cigar helped. Now its time to load the vape and gather my thoughts.

Have a great weekend.

I've tried several different brands in various past grows, and depending on factors such as water makes a final determination on nutes. I use only RO'd water for my main grows, both veg and flowering. This leaves a water conductivity of around 3-5 ppm. Virtually nothing in the water. Knowing this, I know what it is I need to add dependent upon what stage of growth I'm in. This also means it is left to me to provide EVERYTHING the plant needs, and more importantly, being able to deliver it at the right time is paramount. This is where a quality brand of nutrients comes to play. Things overlooked can be trace elements that often aren't provided in the Isles of WalMart or your local hardware store. I have used GH, Technaflora, Humbolt, and H&G. All of which are great products. I currently have been using House and Garden. I'd stay with a two part, then you can add the micro/macro ingredients depending upon what stage of growth your in. Follow manufactures instruction for the stage of growth your at, and you cant go wrong. Within a few grows, it will become second nature maintaining correct EC values for the stage of growth your in. Good luck on your grow! I'll be keeping an eye peeled on ya. In reading the above posting your getting a LOT of valuable information that is a conglomeration of many mistakes, failures and success. These guys can save you a LOT of headache-I know they have for me, and have been an indispensable resource and have saved me MUCH heartache. Peace
