Just a question on buds

I have been wondering for a while why my buds arn't tight my buds come out ok but there not as compact as the buds I buy on the street and I was wondering what I might be doing wrong like maybe wrong fert. or my light is to far away I'm using bloom builder 10-50-10 and I use miracle grow potting mix and I use a 1000 watt HPS light maybe I'm not drying right I just don't know does anyone have an answere it would be greatfully appreciated thanks peace

when is a good time to trim the big leaves (if it matters)? also where would u trim the big leaves off? at the stalk or what?lol sorry if it sounds stupid
