Nate's First Grow - Lowryder & Bubba Cheese

Hello everyone. I started this grow back in January and I started a journal right around that same time. However, someone took issue with my user name and my postings were all deleted. Anyways. It took my a while but I am back. Here is a short summary:

I have 5 total plants: Two Dr. Joint Lowryders and three Emerald City Seeds Bubba Cheese, all are autos. The Bubba Cheese were all regular seeds, but I was lucky enough to go 3/3 on ladies. Four are in 5 gallon smart pots while the fifth (one of the Lowryders) is in a Home Depot 5 gallon bucket. Soil in straight Fox Farms Ocean Forest and nutes are a mix of FF Big 3 with some Overdrive and Rhino Skin thrown in for some added strength and bigger buds.

I am growing in a 4x4x7 (maybe 6.5) Millard grow tent with two PlatinumLED 300W lights. I started with one 300W and quickly realized it was not enough and added a second by the second week. Lights have been on 24/7 since mid-January, but I am switching to 20/4 or 18/6 when my digital timer from Amazon comes in.

The three Cheese were planted on January 6 while the two Lowryders were planted the following week on January 13. Before planting in soil, all seeds were germinated in paper towels. All 6 of my original seeds germinated, but I broke one of the Lowryders when I was moving it from paper towel to solo cup.

The FFOF burnt all five seedlings, but they all recovered nicely.

I started following the Fox Farms feeding schedule at week four, but using about 1/3 of the recommended dosage. I am now on a full bloom mix, but still running at 1/2 strength because the ladies are not showing any sign of nutrient deficiency (that I can see).

Pictures from this morning are below. The three individual plants are the Bubba Cheese, and they are all coming together nicely, putting out large amounts of beautiful white buds. The Lowryders are in the back of the tent and I was just too lazy to crawl in the tent and take some pictures. I will fix that later today when I water/flush the plants. The fourth picture is the full tent, light on, and the fifth picture is one of the Cheeses. Forget which one.

The Cheese turned 6 weeks (42 days) today and have really started packing on some pounds. They put a short burst of growth late last week, but no upward growth since then.

Lowryder are 5 weeks today (35 days) and they could not be more different. One is low and bushy while the other look just like the cheese. Genetics are fun.

Moving forward, I am ordering a second tent, this time 4x2, that I am going to power with a PlatinumLed 450W. I am going to run the 4x4 tent around 20/4, with between 4 - 6 autos at all times, and two photoflowers vegging for at least a month each before the photoflower get moved over to the 4x2 flower tent. I am not trying to set up a constant grow, but I figure I can keep good every product moving from the autos, but let the dedicated veg tent produce some longer growing Indica types and focus a bit more on the medicinal side than the entertainment side.

What I will do different next time:

1. I loved growing in FFOF but didn't like the seedling burn. Purchased Kellogg's Patio Soil (Home Depot house brand) for my future seedlings. Have two going right now and they are not showing any complaints. Will pot in FFOF when I transplant to their final homes. I am going to start cooking some custom blend super soil, but I am not there yet.

2. Final homes: I used 5 gallon smart pots but didn't fill them all the way. It now looks like the soil is compacting and the pots have even less volume of soil. I already ordered 10 3 gallon smart pots. I will probably run my autos in the 3 gallon smart pots and the photos in the 5 gallon. All filled to the top with soil.

3. Records: This is my biggest place I can improve. I need to take better records. End of question. I plan on designing an excel template I can use to track time, water, and feedings. If anyone already has such a template and is willing to share...

4. Pictures: Get a better camera and take more pictures with and without the lights on.

5. Organic: I eventually want to go full organic, but I am not there yet. Will get a few basic grows under my belt and see where I go from there.

I plan on updating this journal weekly as this grow finishes and fingers crossed I will get a solid yield with solid strength.

I currently have two Nirvana Medusa sprouting (and they are looking beautiful). After about another week under my CFL's they will go into the 4x4 for a nice long veg. When the Medusa are ready to flower, I will buy the 4x2 and Platinum 450. But that is another grow log.

I placed an order last night for 6 more autos. I should have ordered those seeds a month ago so I could have better planned maximizing empty space in the grow room, but just another lesson learned. I feel pretty good about my plans for dual vegging/flower tents and I just need a few grows to dial in.

Finally, I good bro of mine is a professional grower from CA. He grows organic in soil and takes an amazing amount of pride in his work. He has been in my ear daily on this grow, telling me what to do (even when I used non-organic Fox Farm nutes and I think he wanted to punch me), and any success I have here is due to him. Thanks CA.

Update number 2. The cheese are starting to smell like cheese, but I'm not getting much aroma, yet off the Lowryders. All 5 plants are pushing up trikes and getting frosty. Lower fan leaves are starting to turn yellow, but it is autumn to them an d it's what they are supposed to do. Harvesting in 2/3 weeks. They are all still clear trikes, but I'm checking overt other day.

The two old cheese got their last feeding today. 1/2 strength FF nutes with a shot of Rhino Skin & Overdrive.

Hit the garden store yesterday and bought soil for my next grow. Working my way towards making my own soil.

Now, for the bud porn....

Quick update:

Cheese 1 & 2 are one week from harvest (give or take a few days). Trikes are starting to cloud, a few ambers poking up. Seed bank website indicates 56 days from seed, but I'm going to finish in the low 60's. Not bad if you ask me. Fed them ice water with a tablespoon of honey. Forgot to buy mollasses (again). Figured a little honey wouldn't screw things up. This will probably be their last drink, depending on trike development.

Cheese 3 and the two Lowryders are looking good. They are getting a good bloom feeding today (with autos in FFOF, my next run will not got any veg nutes, then on week 5 I plan on starting the FF 1/2 strength week 12 schedule through the end of flower/flush).

Will post picture shortly. I've been trying to get in the garden all night, but just too many good basketball games on.

About to start my second journal. Have 2 Nirvana Medusas, 3 Delicious Seeds Black Cream, 1 Delicious seeds Sweet Desert Rose (freebie from Herbies), and three Dutch Passion Blue Automazar. Medusas are photos, all the others are auto. Have a Platinum P600 on order and it should be here by the time I harvest Cheese 1 & 2 next week and open up some room for them. That will give me 2 P300's and one P600 in the veg tent for now. When it's time to flower the Medusa (see below), I'll order a 2x4 tent and another P600, then probably run the two 300's in the flower tent and the two 600's in the veg tent. Should give me a more even spread of light.

I want to flux (or some variation thereof) the Medusas. Been studying Light Addict's work and I'm sure I could pull that off.

This grow will officially start next Tuesday. Please keep your eyes peeled.

Pictures will follow once I'm caught up on my college hoops.

First picture: Cheese 1. She's 30" tall and filling out nicely. I just wish my buds were a bit bigger. Will incorporate mollasses in my next grow to address thus.

A small update:

I'd planned on harvesting the two older cheese today, but as of last night my trikes were only starting to get cloudy. I'm leaving these two ladies in for a few more days. Will chop when I start seeing dark trikes showing up.

Other three are looking awesome. The poor dwarf Lowryder (only true indica on this grow) only has 4 or 5 bud sites, but her cola is 7 inches long and damn near 6+ inches around. It's almost mind blowing. Anyone know if I can find a photo dwarf? I googled it but all dwarf seeds were autos. Thought it might be fun to veg a photo dwarf for a few months, just too see how large of a cola I can get. 12" tall plants don't take up much space...

Will post pictures when I have a chance to take some. I don't know much, but I know this grow looks really good right now. Nate is a happy toker :)

Thank you very much. Means a lot coming from someone with a reputation like yours. Just so you and Platinum both know, I was going T5 on this but after reading the Platinum sponsored grow journals you and GovCheese put out, I convinced myself to spend the money and buy the best. And I'm glad I did. Went from 1 P300 to 2 P300's to adding another P600. I think I'm addicted.

Its fun bro :D...Just always have a plan to cool it. I am happy (sure gov is too) we helped prove they work and work well. It's funny what being able to use that par can do. I am sure platinum is happy too. He's cool.

I am really happy your light shipped. Your grow is going to explode!!!

Its easy to get addicted to, I have 3 P450's in my tent right now, just because I could...lol

The girls look great, NateToke! You will have an insane amount of light for your next grow and I'm sure the results will show the benefits. The plants sure do seem to love the Platinums. I'm a believer too and am in the waiting line for a P450, now about 3 weeks backordered. It will be worth the wait, I'm sure. Congratulations on your grow!

Thanks Tokezilla.

I can't say enough about Platinum. I'm an LED man through and through and want to spread the gospel.

Can you imagine flowering to indoor Sativa under a P600 in an 8 foot tent? I can't wait!

Hi Nate, welcome and I'm glad to stop by to introduce myself...I grow with 3 Platinum P600's, my first grow to be harvested in about 2 weeks....you won't be disappointed, bro....rock on, things look great around here.....

Update:

I harvested a branch about 10 days ago and smoked it last night. It was wonderful, so well my trikes were still mostly cloudy with no signs of amber, I went ahead and harvest the two older cheese. As I was harvesting them, I noticed that my main cola on the dwarf/Lowryder was covered in white mildew looking weblike material, so I chopped her as well. Tossed every single flower with mildew on it and set the rest of the leaves, buds, and trim aside to make edibles with. Harvested about 60 grams wet weight from the dwarf, not counting the buds that I tossed.

From my limited experience, it looks like the Cheese gave a good harvest. I will post pictures and weight when they are dry in the next weeks or so.

The last cheese and lowryder look good. Checked them for signs of mildew and there was not any. I am giving those two ladies at least another week before I chop them.

With the two big cheese out of my grown room, I was able to transplant the last of my germinated seedlings, so I will start the grown journal on them early next week when I have some time to review my notes and take some pictures.

Off to watch college basketball. Adios.

Posting a follow up. The two remaining plants from this grow, one cheese and one Lowryder, are still not ready to harvest, but the two cheese I harvested last week are just about dry. Will trim and start cure in two or three more days. Already smoking some of it. Tastes and smells like cheddar cheese, so if the cure will only make it better I have some awesome stuff to look forward to.

Buzz is nice. Not sure how to describe, but I just watched a fascinating documentary on lampshade manufacturing. That kind of buzz.

Made budder and brownies from the Lowryder I cut the mold off of. Not the strongest edibles but helps me fall asleep at night.

Will hang my new lights tomorrow and will take some picture then.

My first two plants are chopped, dried, and curing. Ended up right around 2 ounces total. Hitting an ounce a plant on my first grow made me happy. Need to give credit to Fox Farms for their soil and PlatinumLED for their lights.

I have two plants left from this grow, one is a cheese and one is a Lowryder. These trikes are just starting to get cloudy. I'm slightly worried about these two because they are around 90 days old but not ready for harvest. Both are autos and I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Still have plenty of room in my grow tent so I'm just going to keep watching and waiting.

Has anyone else had issues with a "stuck" auto that just wouldn't put out red trichromes?

Hope all is well in your world.
